Week Ten &  Eleven: Reflective Practices
Weekly Learning Outcome
  1. Develop and refine the design presentation.

  2. Synthesise the reflections and combine key points of the design process and thinking.

  3. Present the final design concept in both an oral presentation and digital format.

  4. Consider the guest critics feedback for any final modification.

Final Critic
For the past two weeks I implemented what the first critic had advised me to explore - in the meantime  I have been preparing for my final presentation before the digital submission

Quick Feedback Notes for Final Development + Written Responses

What is the fundamental purpose? Internal park? ‘business’ upstairs for yoga?

The fundamental purpose of the space is to create a transformation of Imperial Lane that embraces cinematic light qualities that are often overlooked by viewers. In doing so I aim to create a cinematic sensory space that creates a unique experience for city goers through parametric design and nature. The physical and immaterial qualities I implement into the space will create a concept of tranquility, calmness and embracing of connection allowing users to simply bypass, relax or meditate in the space. Moreover, I want to transform the site that is currently seen as a concrete bypass into a transcendental experience.

Interesting beginning with light light flares

- going somewhere guiding the scene

- creates drama dapple light through the trees

Different intent? Are you trying to give a calm yoga space? Or opposite? At the moment playing between two ideas?

- maybe try to playing with the tension between the two ideas? Playing w the contrast confused between the two?

natural vs artificial?

I am trying to portray a calm space where bypasses can go - The current city and alleyways we have in Auckland are bland. Studies show that adding biophilia in public spaces positively affects peoples moods and creates a place where people want to connect with their environment. A breath of fresh air in a concrete jungle. I understood that during my presentation I was reminded that light flares in film were used to add "drama". Although this was where my inspiration from the director JJ Abrams came from, I was more mesmerized with the concept of  its perfect imperfections, how during films you often dont appreciate the atmospheric and realness it gives in the film. I wanted this experience to create and unveiling - or and ahhh effect to my viewers as they walk through the space.

Is there aspects of the light and shadow of the site that your design is responding to?

Do a site analysis

I will be creating a site analysis for the final submission - focusing on light and possibly research historic aspects that have influenced my choice? Biophillia in the space before colonisaton. New Zealand before. Greenery etc

- In relation to your light flare use it as a concept or reflection of the site

- Will help to build the concept of the design

- Explains the project for others

-Somebody new to the project

- Define response to the site how does it work as a centre for moving image?

The centre works as a moving image in reference to the inspiration of the light flares. As people walk through the space they are formulating their own experiences by the Komorebi phenomenon. Additional programming allows the users to meditate or simply take a pause due to its serene atmospheric qualities. Although as I continue the final development of my design I would like to add an additional programming sector within my space - Possibly a small gallery of images of Aotearoa before colonization in reference to Fort Lanes History.  As I read the brief I wanted to explore the Fort Lane site  in relation to a the cinematic concept &/or processes, projection, light, sequence, movement.

- Address the function head on will help to convey this - framing

- Viewing media through slots in the wall? going through a dark tunnel from queen street

-Besides light give us something to do in the space - could you do more? to have a transcendental experience do you need to be doing something? operations to have the experience?

- Plant a tree?

- Do something allowing you to think about light

- Watching something?

- Engaging in something to have this experience

- Brings in cinematic to think about other worlds

- Go back to the floor plan in programming like the overall concept! just small tweaking to do middle right image

- Relationship with light channels

-How do you get light out of there into other places within the space

- Extension of the light channels in the space dark imperial lane?

-Being the inside of a camera with light leaking in

Reflection:
It was really interesting to see all my classmates projects and the variation of how everyone has interpreted a cinematic space. It was inspiring to see where people gathered their influences from eg. Site, Movies, Techniques etc.
I was quite nervous for my presentation. I felt as though I did the best I could under the pressure although I feel like I missed some vital parts of my presentation during my explanation. I was good to hear from real people in the industry and how they interpreted my work. I feel that there are quite a few things I need to consider during the final development of my design,
- Create a site plan | Highlight light | Could I add historical aspects of biophillia?
- Clarify floor plans in final images
- Add another thing people can do? Gallery, Light projection? Allow the users to do more than just walk, meditate and sit.. Can they leave the space learning something new?
Overall I am happy with my progress and am looking forward to the end of this semester!!
